LIT ANALYSIS #3: The Book Thief

1. I would summarize the plot of this incredible novel by stating it centers Liesel Meminger, a ten year old living in Germany during WWII. Liesel experiences are narrated by DEATH, who describes both  the beauty and destruction of life in this era.

2. The themes of the novel would be Mortality,Language,Reading,&Writing, and finally Love.  Mortality, is one because it's introduced by the character/narrator DEATH,which underlines that mortality is present in the lives of each character. Lets take note this novel took place during WWII which represents mortality significantly. Lang.,reading,&writing. These 3 things are themes as well because each symbolizes the expression of freedom throughout the story. As symbolic elements it provides liberation and identity to the characters who are able to wield their power.Lang.,reading,& writing also serve as social marks. For example, the wealthy citizens in the story are portrayed as owning their own libraries and being literate, while the poor characters are illiterate & don't own any books. The Nazi burning burning of books is another example of symbolic elements. Liesel rescuing the book of from German which represents her reclaiming freedom& fight against being controlled by the Nazis. Lastly, love is our final theme.  In the midst of the damage the war, death,& loss have caused Liesel and the other characters in the book, love is seen as an agent of change and freedom. For example, Liesel learns to overcome her traumas by learning to love and being loved by her foster parents and friends.

3. I would imagine Zusak's morning routine different than most people. I would imagine him waking up, opening his window blinds and then going out to the kitchen and make some coffeethen just sit down and and see the beautiful view of the mountains and stare off and think and then begin writing. " Nothing better than the beautiful green mountains."

4. 4 literary devices in this novel are metaphor; personification; simile; and metonymy. (DEFINITION of METONYMY: the substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct FOR that of the thing meant, for ex: suit for business executive, or the track for horse racing.) Examples of          Metaphors in The Book Theif:" The stealing that cemented their friendship completely."  "Curtains of rain were drawn around the car." and " cherries of blood had grown into plums." Examples of personification are: " his hands were cemented into his pockets.", " A bathrobe answered the door. Example of Simile; " Blood streamed till it was dried on the road, and the bodies were struck there, like drift woods after the flood.", " His blonde hair, although darkened, was like a candle." Example of metonymy; " Laughter and smoke rose out of the conversation before they moved to the next job." " Smelling the hunger on some of the streets and shaking their heads at the wealth on others."

5. What drew me to this book was my teacher suggesting it which then on was very curious to me to know what the novel was about.

6. What kept me reading the first 10 pages was the particular introduction on how he began his story. It was unusual than other authors writing because he states ideas without thinking about one more time. For example, " You are going die". What author would begin with an intriguing saying ? Not many people.

7. My reading habits, hmm let's just say when I'm captivated by an awesome novel I won't stop reading it and keep on going m. Also it's difficult to not  keep on reading something you really enjoy. 😊
