LIT ANALYSIS
TheCage by Ruth Minsky Sender
Theme: The theme of this novel is willingness to sacrifice for others. Very thought provoking.
Tone: The tone of The Cage is first person point of view but I would add to that by saying is how Riva (main character) has HATE toward the Nazis.
Plot: The plot takes place in Germany during World War II. She was separated from her mother and older siblings when the Nazis captured them and sent the to concentration camps. Additionally, she got ill and was taken by nazis soldiers too many hospitals but none of them would assist her because she was Jewish. Continuously, Riva meet a doctor that helped her how to write and that is how she got her emotions out in paper by writing all the sacrifices her younger brothers made for her .
Syntax: Sender's combination on her language usage would be very expressive and emotional thought provoking .
Characterization: Riva Minsky is the main character, thirteen years Old and a Jewish girl. During this period the World War II was going on. She was a young girl that had many trust issues . She believed that everyone betrayed her because they took her mom and siblings away from her. One thing about her was she appreciated the sacrifices her young siblings did for her since she was an ill child.
3. I would imagine Minsky's morning routine diffrent than other writers or people in general. I would imagine her waking up, preparing some coffe to drink outside her garden and start writing and writing. These two excerpts illustrate my point " I miss the spring season, lighting up my feelings." another one is " I wrote my experiences during the most horrible days and expressed my feelings."
4. Five literary techniques I observed was 1. She wrote in first person point of view. 2. Minsky had the ability to communicate with the reader very well. 3. She also gave concrete details making it visual to the readers. 4. Ruth has a way of communicating with the reader making it so good to keep on reading and never stopping. 5. Word choices she used to describe certain things, places, items, feelings, thoughts, etc. Three excerpts that back up her literacy techniques would be " He listens with interest to my every word. His eyes shine. I speak to him of a tommorow that is coming for all of us." " Warm rays of sunshine fill the house, mixed with the sweet smell of lilac in full bloom."
1. Something that drew me into this book was that it is a true story based on historical and true events. To add to this, it is a Holocaust novel which I love reading ! All the details these victims lived theoght and survived through by writing all there thoughts and feelings down. Something I expected was more insight on what she felt during this episode of her life.
2. What kept me reading past the ten first pages was the fact she expressed her thoughts and feelings through the novel and expressing them all.
3. My reading habits are usually getting stuck in the book and difficult to stop reading that would be my only reading habit! 😊
